Tooth Extraction Aftercare: Do’s and Don'ts
July 08, 2024

A person may have undergone a tooth extraction procedure for a variety of reasons, including tooth decay, impaction, or making space during an orthodontic treatment. While a tooth extraction might be a simple, painless procedure, postoperative care matters a lot for a positive outcome without any complications. In this blog we shall discuss about post tooth extraction care

The Points of Tooth Extraction Aftercare

To encourage blood clotting, gently bite the gauze.

The dentist will put gauze over the extraction site after a tooth has been extracted to help the blood clot normally. The patient should bite down on the gauze lightly for a while and remove the gauze after 30-45 mins.

Use ice packs.

Swelling is a common occurrence following tooth extraction. It can be alleviated with the use of ice pack application to the affected area at 15-minute intervals.

Take Rest.

It is best for a patient to take rest for a day or two after undergoing a tooth extraction.

Lie down with head propped up.

Blood clot formation at the site of tooth extraction is necessary for proper healing, patients keep their head propped up while sleeping or lying down to facilitate the formation of the blood clot and speed up the healing process.

Don’t miss medication.

Remember to take the antibiotics and pain medicine recommended on time and as per the directions by the dentist.

Drink plenty of water.

To aid in maintaining a clean mouth and extraction site, water is an absolute need. Bacteria in the mouth can cause tooth infections; rinsing with water can help.

Eat plenty of soft, nutritious foods.

The patient should eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and ice cream for the first few days.

Gentle tooth brushing

After undergoing tooth extraction the patient should continue to brush teeth gently but regular.

Don’t smoke

Smoking can cause dry socket, a painful condition that delays the healing process hence it is always better to quit smoking.

Don’t use straws.

Using straw to draw up liquid might cause pressure to build up and might disturb clot formation and can cause dry socket hence it is always better to avoid straws.

Don’t gargle.

Do not gargle for the first twenty-four hours after a tooth extraction to help clot formation and speed up healing.

Stop spitting

Spitting puts pressure on the extraction site, which can disturb the process of blood clot formation.

Stay away from hot beverages.

Do not drink hot beverages; have them at room temperature instead.

Mind your tongue.

Avoid sticking your tongue near the extraction site as it might dislodge the blood clot, and result in dry socket and other dental problems.

Avoid aspirin.

Aspirin thins the blood, and consuming it following a tooth extraction can cause delay in healing of wounds. Only use the painkiller prescribed by your dentist.

Conclusion

The healing time of a wound site following tooth extraction varies for each patient and may range from a few days to a few weeks. These tips will make the healing process faster and free from complications. For painless extractions, visit Dental Expert Clinic, Malad West, Mumbai.
